Review and manage health and safety

Employers and organisations are required by law to ensure that their health and safety arrangements are appropriate for their organisation and at the very least meet their legal responsibilities.

The most effective way to manage this is by implementing a programme to monitor and review your policies and procedures. A vital element of this is your health and safety policy.

Reviewing your health and safety

Existing policies should be reviewed at least annually and/or:

  • If there has been a change in the work activity or workplace
  • Where there is reason to suspect current assessments and procedures are no longer sufficient
  • Following a major incident.

Working through an annual management review will help you identify any areas you might need to evaluate as well as work out the next steps and delegation if necessary.

Get started: create a monitoring record

Here is a template form that will enable you to plan and review the monitoring your organisation requires. As you can see from the worked example this could include activities such as:

  • Inspections, safety tours, equipment checks and maintenance plans
  • Frequency required, eg. daily, weekly
  • Designated individual(s), eg. supervisor or manager.
