Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - Your Questions

Question: My boss has asked me to pay for my work boots, is this right?

A: The Health and Safety Personal Protective Equipment Regulations (1992) cover the provision of all personal protective equipment including safety boots.

The regulations state that where risks cannot be controlled by any other means, or where legislation requires its specific use, employees must be provided with suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The risk assessment process for the workplace or task should identify what PPE is needed.

If safety footwear is required, the employee should not be asked to supply their own or even contribute to the cost.
