Men's Health Forum Scotland (MHFS) has issued the challenge to men across Scotland to swap their jeans for their joggers and take part in the 7th annual MHFS 10k for Men at Bellahouston Park, Glasgow on Sunday 17th June 2012.
The unique event, which is the only 10k in Scotland specifically for men, takes place on Fathers Day each year and is the focus of National Men's Health Week in Scotland which aims to raise awareness of men's health issues and encourage participation in healthy physical activity all year round.
Last year the Men's 10k attracted 4,000 entrants of all abilities, ranging from 15 to 80 years old. All of them supported Men's Health Forum Scotland by successfully walking, jogging or running the 10k. 500 early bird registrations have already been received for the 2012 event which is on course to be the most successful year yet.
Scott Hastings, Scotland international Rugby legend and all-round inspirational athlete, was on hand to officially launch the event at the Palace of Art at Bellahouston Park on Monday.
Scott said: "I am delighted to be involved with the MHFS 10k for Men and am looking forward to the event on Father's day on 17th June. Men rarely have the chance to talk about health but the Men's 10K really helps raise awareness of how important men's health is for all of us."
Scott added: "From fitness, to prostate cancer, to testicular cancer we can all benefit from speaking openly about our concerns, our reaction to dealing with health issues and through sport we can support each other."
Gavin Hastings, who previously captained the Scottish International Rugby Team, will also be participating in the event alongside his brother on Sunday 17th June.
Gavin said: "As the MHFS 10k for Men takes place on Fathers day it is great that both Scott and I are able to take part.. We are both fathers and as former sportsmen, we feel privileged to have the opportunity to encourage other men to take part in such a wonderful and inspirational event."
Gavin added: "Sport is an area of life that transcends many boundaries and has the ability to connect with large numbers of people. This explains why the Men's 10k is a fantastic way of raising awareness of the issue of men's health, which is too often overlooked given the typical man's reluctance to openly discuss their health."
Event Sponsors include: See Me; Breathing Space; Strathmore and Brooks.
Charity Partners include: Prostate Scotland; The Stroke Association; Wobbly Williams and Yorkhill Children's Hospital.
